November Notes
AS I WRITE this editorial, I’m 35,000 feet in the air aboard United 891, and headed to Tokyo for the artistic world championships. The excite- ment is at a peak with prediction, rumors and wild anticipation. Of
course, by the time you receive this
issue, the worlds will be history and
we’ll all try to sort out what happened and why. But for now I am
especially pleased to present this
issue of our magazine.
First, the rhythmic world championships produced more historic
results. Yevgenia Kanayeva won
her third all-around title and, for the
second time, all six possible gold
medals. After the first time in 2009
in Mie, Japan, she came directly to
Seoul, Korea, where I was producing
a gigantic show for Hyundai Capital.
When you see her work in person, it
becomes very apparent why she can
dominate the way she does. She’s
elegant, poised, well trained and very
talented. She truly captivated our
audience of more than 20,000 for
two shows. Furthermore, I am also
very pleased to see that Daria Kondakova has elevated her performances so that she really pushes
Kanayeva, who won by only .05 over
Daria. She also was at our show and
performed remarkably; no one
pirouettes the way she does. Many
thanks to Vera Atkinson for her
insightful story on the worlds for us.
To continue our look inside many
of the famous training facilities
around the world, we were able to
get a peek inside Lilleshall, the classical national training center for Great
Britain. John Atkinson, Vera’s husband and legendary British coach,
gives us a detailed history on the
transformation of Lilleshall, which
has become integral to the recent
progress of British gymnastics.
Eileen Langsley, the 2010 recipient of the International Gymnastics
Hall of Fame Order of Merit and
expert photojournalist, captured the
tour pictorially as only she can. With
London on the horizon, we all want
to have a strong home team to capture the media attention for gymnastics.

With the NCAA competitive season just around the corner, IG editor
Dwight Normile surveyed the top
men’s and women’s teams to give
you a chance to pick your Super Six
for 2012 (p. 37). You will also want
to read “ 10 Questions With” Sarah
Patterson (p. 12), whose Alabama
team won the 2011 title. More and
more, the women’s collegiate arena
is gaining strength and quality, and
the men continue to hang on to
enough teams to make the rivalries
at the top quite interesting!
