Theory of Evolution
IHAVE ALWAYS been drawn to new ideas that could make gymnastics more interesting and different. Hence, when I heard that B rent Klaus, the son of the founders of International Gymnas- tics Camps (IGC), Cheryl and Bruno
Klaus, was staging the first edition of
his pet project, Evolution, I knew I had
to attend. Unfortunately, the event fell
on the same weekend that Hurricane
Irene hit the East Coast. Nevertheless, I
flew to Philadelphia and drove up to
IGC where the competitors were
preparing for the competition. Well,
actually it’s a game!
Saturday morning Bruno gave me a
three-hour tour of the facilities, which
were way more impressive than I had
anticipated—top-of-the-line gymnastics
training halls and beautifully kept living
accommodations spread out over
perfectly landscaped flower beds
and lawns. It is a very positive
environment in which to train.
That afternoon the game was
staged at the Stabler Arena at
Lehigh University while Irene
made her way up the coast.
Although the game lasted four
hours, the competitors as well as
the audience really seemed to
enjoy the event. I was especially
impressed with the skill level.
Going head-to-head, the mem-
bers of the Ice (Blue) and Fire
(Red) teams performed with lots of
excitement and energy. I hope you will
get a sense of Evolution from the
wonderful photographs by the brilliant
Dave Black starting on page 38 of
this issue.
