not compete an Amanar vault, she still easily
defeated two-time defending champion Kyla
Ross (Gym-Max), 120.950-117.650, winning
bars, beam and floor in the process.
“It just means the world to me just knowing
that I finally did it,” said Ohashi, who turned
14 on April 12. She also attributed her new-
found confidence to a book she read called
“Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner
Excellence.”
With world-class routines already, Ohashi is
trying not to dwell on the fact that she’ll have
to wait five years to compete in an Olympics.
“It does feel like [it’s a long wait] at times, but
the years go by fast,” she said.
Ross, who turns 15 on Oct. 24, will be eli-
gible for London 2012, and she believes her
strength as an all-arounder is her best quality.
In St. Paul, she had trouble on day one, but
her 60.15 in finals was the highest of the day,
after Ohashi fell from balance beam on a
sheep jump. Ross, who has grown a few inch-
es since a year ago, vaulted an Amanar both
days, but it was devalued to a double twist in
prelims. And even though she placed a distant
second to Ohashi, she felt she had improved.
“I don’t think I stepped back this year,” she
said. “I definitely added to most of my rou-
tines, and I did score higher in my all-around
than last year.”
Sarah Finnegan (GAGE) edged Lexie
Priessman (Cincinnati) for the bronze,
115.30-115.10, with the latter winning vault
with an excellent Amanar. Like Ohashi,
Priessman is too young for the 2012
Olympics. IG
