Koko Tsurumi and two-time world all-around
champion Kohei Uchimura won their third
consecutive all-around titles at the 50th NHK
Cup, held June 11-12 in Tokyo. Using scores
combined with April’s national championships,
which Tsurumi and Uchimura also won, the
NHK Cup served as the second part of Japan’s
team trials for the world championships in Tokyo
in October. (Japan relies on a point system to
automatically determine its teams.)
Three Tanaka siblings finished among the top
six: Rie (second, women), Kazuhito (second,
men) and Yu s u k e (sixth, men).

IORDACHE DOMINATES IN TRNAVA
Romania’s Larisa Iordache won the all-around, uneven bars, balance beam and floor
exercise at the 24th Gym-Festival of Trnava, Slovakia, held June 4-5. Two-time Russian
Olympian Anna Pavlova finished second all-around and first on vault.
All-around bronze medalist Maria Balea of
Romania continued her impressive series of
results. Born Sept. 8, 1996, in Cimpeni, Balea
placed fifth all-around at the ’ 10 Romanian
junior championships. In June, Iordache and
Badea helped Romania defeat Great Britain in a
junior dual meet held in Lilleshall, England.
PETIT, TOMMASONE FIRST IN FRANCE
Marine Petit regained her senior women’s all-around title and Cyril Tommasone earned his
first senior men’s all-around title at the French
championships, held May 20-22 in Toulouse.
Petit, the 2009 winner, finished first over
defending champion Marine Brevet. Youna
Dufournet, the ’09 world vault bronze medalist,
did not compete all-around. Returning from a
knee injury and focused this year on her studies,
Dufournet won the apparatus title on uneven
bars. Defending men’s champion Hamilton
Sabot made big mistakes on pommel horse and
high bar to place eighth.
