Ferlito 12.900.
Komova appeared tired, falling onto the beam on
her second of consecutive layouts. Noticeably rattled, she nearly fell on her full turn with leg up and
dropped off on a side somi. Komova received a
consolation hug from her coach and immediately
began icing her left hand.
Ferlito nailed her beam routine to take the silver,
following her bronze medals in the all-around and
vault. Donald was slightly off on her Rulfova and
didn’t connect her front aerial to flip-flop-layout
series, but showed excellent form for the bronze.
Tan’s new floor exercise, choreographed by
Adriana Pop in July, had simpler tumbling than
some of her competitors but was exquisite in its
presentation (front double twist to stag jump; stuck
double pike; stuck 11⁄2 twist to front-full; and a 21⁄2
twist dismount) for 14.525.
Bulimar upgraded her tumbling for the final. She
opened with the only double layout of the competi-
tion and continued with a 11⁄2 twist to double tuck,
piked full-in and double pike for second place.
Competing on her 15th birthday (Aug. 22), Bulimar
returned to the podium after her routine as “Happy
Birthday” was played in her honor.
Komova settled for third after stumbling backward and nearly sitting down her opening pass of
11⁄2 twist through to Arabian double front. She
momentarily appeared dazed by the mistake, but
quickly regained her composure and finished strong
with a double tuck, triple twist and double pike for
the bronze medal. Gomez performed well on both
beam (nailed tucked full) and floor, but finished
fourth in both.
Ganbat took gold in the men’s vault to give
Mongolia its most successful result in history. With
a handspring-double front and a Kasamatsu-full,
Ganbat edged Turkey’s Ferhat Arican (
handspring-full to piked front, Kasamatsu- 11⁄2), 15.650-15.662.
Top qualifier Abad won the bronze ( 15. 45).
Stepko won parallel bars, making him the most
successful male gymnast in Singapore with two
golds and two silvers. Stepko’s set (cast to piked
front between the bars; Tippelt; Healy; Stutz;
Diamidov and double pike) was the cleanest in the
final where all the gymnasts performed similar routines.
Oldham, the European junior all-around champion, redeemed himself with the gold medal on high
bar. Having fallen twice in the all-around final,
Oldham outperformed the field with a layout
Tkatchev, Tkatchev-half and a drilled layout double-double dismount.
And so closed the first Summer Youth Olympic
Games, which featured 26 sports. The 2014 version will be in Nanjing, China, where fans will surely get a glimpse of the next generation of supersonic youth. IG
