beam dismount in prelims and withdrew.
Junior National Team: Kennedy Baker, Gabrielle Douglas, Brenna Dowell, Ericha
Fassbender, Sarah Finnegan, Ariana Guerra, Madison Kocian, McKayla Maroney,
Keely McNeer, Katelyn Ohashi, Elizabeth Price, Lexie Priessman, Kyla Ross,
Sabrina Vega, Jordyn Wieber, McKenzie Wofford
Suddenly, the path to victory began much
wider for first-day leader Ross, who had competed in the subdivision before Wieber took
the floor. She improved her all-around from
57.900 to 58.550 and closed her meet with
an impressive wobble-free 15. 45 on beam.
She easily defeated WOGA’s Katelyn Ohashi,
116.450-114.300. McKayla Maroney (All
Olympia), who won vault with an excellent
Amanar, placed third.
“It feels really great to win for my second
time in a row,” said Ross, who is coached by
Jenny Zhang and Howie Long. “I did feel
some pressure after [bars], because it wasn’t
my best. I knew I had to go out there and do
my best on beam.”
Ohashi might have challenged for the gold
had she not missed her flip-flop, flip-flop, lay-
out-full on beam both days, but she did win the
gold on bars, despite a fall on a piked Jaeger
on day one. Asked about her performance,
Ohashi was short on words. “Not one of my
best,” said Ohashi, who said that nerves affect-
ed her performance. “I definitely could have
improved on a lot of stuff. I just need to get
more confident.”
Such is the dilemma for juniors, many of
whom have the tricks but lack the poise to pull
them off. The good thing is, there’s always
next year. IG
