WE ARE NOW more than one year after the Beijing Olympics, and it is obvious that the focus of
the gymnastics community has shifted to the
future and London. I don’t mean the London
Olympics, thank goodness, but the London
world championships in October. Although
some cynics discount this competition because it
is only for individual competition, I’m looking
forward to it.
And, of course, IG will be there in full force.
Not only will Thomas Schreyer be there to shoot the event, but also the
brilliant photographers Dave Black
and Eileen Langsley are reactivating
their shutters once again to document
this competition. All of these photographic geniuses have unique ways of
capturing the emotions of the athletes,
coaches and often the judges, and I am
very anxious to see their work and share
it with all of you. Until then, I hope you
enjoy reading “London Calling,” our
special world championship preview in
this issue.
I’m sure many of you have noticed
IG’s “new” presence on facebook, t witter and the other digital outer
spaces. Check us out by searching for “International Gymnast” on facebook
and at twitter.com/intlgymnast. With these available, we will be announcing
our unique and varied coverage from London. We expect to be reachable
from many different avenues.
My friend and wonderfully creative person Jessica
Bendinger has just completed
her first novel, “The Seven
Rays,” which will be released by
Simon & Schuster on Nov. 24.
You probably remember that
Jessica wrote the script for the
blockbuster “Bring It On” that
debuted No. 1 at the box office
in 2000. She followed that by
writing and directing “Stick It,”
which stands as the top-grossing
gymnastics movie of all time. I loved working with Jessica on “Stick It” as the
lead consultant.
Although “The Seven Rays” is not gymnastics-based, it does have that
Bendinger magic that shows her understanding and caring for the moral education of young ladies. Check out more about this book at
