Van Gelder Admits Cocaine Use
THOMAS SCHRE YER
YURI van Gelder failed a doping test at the Dutch champi- onships in June, which cost him his rings title, his job
in the Dutch Army and his sponsors. Time will tell if it
ended his career, too. The 2005 world and current European
champ on rings admitted to using cocaine three days before
the competition, and the Dutch federation suspended him
temporarily. That van Gelder, 26, would use the drug before
a big meet suggests that his “recreational” use was more
of a habit. The strongman, who said he will seek professional help for his weakness, could be suspended for up to
two years. Such a setback could make it difficult for van
Gelder to resume his competitive career. “I am a fighter
and I want to stay up there with the best in the world,” he
said. Surely, this is a battle worth fighting. —IGStaff
