GLENN SUNDBY, who died March 18, was and will
always remain a huge icon in the sport of gymnastics. It would not be difficult to prove that he was
more important to the sport than anyone else—he
introduced it to the masses. With a passion for both

gymnastics and life, Glenn began the marketing of
our sport in ways no one had ever dreamed. He used
brilliant photographs to adorn his magazine—this
magazine—to produce posters with catchy slogans
and inspirational statements. He understood that our
sport needed stars, and he helped make them. Olga, Nadia and Mary Lou were
his girls, each representing a different but compelling personality group. Every
day in our office, I pass by a poster of Olga Korbut with the acclamation “Olga,
the girl who brought the joy of gymnastics to the
world.” He saw Nadia as mysterious, and Mary

Bart Conner summed it up very well: “Glenn
was determined to elevate gymnastics to the
highest position in the world of sports. He had little patience for anyone who did not have the
same passion for gymnastics that he had.”

Glenn had huge impact on people from all
areas of our sport. The sensational sports photographer Dave Black sent the following story
that points to the magic that Glenn could create:

Photo Chief at Pauley Pavilion, which was the
Olympic gymnastics venue in 1984. He greeted
me within minutes after I arrived to photograph
the first day of competition, and expressed his
delight to see someone in the media who knew
how to photograph the sport. I said he would be
welcome to use my pictures in his magazine
when the games were over to which he offered
me a front row ticket that he had to the women’s
all-around final. Even though I was accredited to
work in the designated photo areas, I accepted
the ticket.

“As soon as Mary Lou Retton had stuck her perfect 10 vault and I had finished
taking pictures of her and Bela celebrating, I pulled out the ticket Glenn had given
me several days earlier. I made my way around the arena and down to the front
row seat that was directly in front of the Olympic medals podium. There were no
photographers or media allowed on the medals presentation side of the arena,
and when Mary Lou got her gold and lifted the bouquet of flowers high in the air, I
made this iconic picture. Mary Lou’s career wasn’t the only career that started
that day. Thanks, Glenn.”
For some reason, Glenn came to me at the 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis and told me that his magazine needed a change and he had decided that
I was the one to make it. As shocked as I was, I stepped up to challenge and have
never looked back. You see, when Glenn asked you
to do something you learned very quickly that no was
not an option. He has touched so many lives in such
positive ways, he will be sorely missed. Happy Handstand, Glenn!
