WHEN teacher Adrian Dinsmore
showed his class a selection of
Olympic videos, he asked his students to
write letters to their favorite athletes.
About half of his 28 pupils at Harrisville
School in Auckland, New Zealand, chose
Nadia Comaneci.
Eventually, the students received autographed photos of Nadia, who was the
only athlete to respond to their fan mail.
One thing led to another, and Mr.
Dinsmore arranged for a Nadia Comaneci
Pose Competition at the school. “I’m an
avid fan of Nadia and her many achieve-
ments,” Adrian says. “This whole experience has been really encouraging and
exciting for the children—and me.”
More good things followed, as Mr.
Dinsmore, a former gym coach, was
given permission to start a school gymnastics team. He’s calling it the Harrisville
Flame, in honor of Nadia (who once
belonged to a team named The Flame).
“[Nadia’s] kind of like an unofficial
classroom mascot now,” Adrian says.
“My students have been really blessed by
all this, and it has motivated them to a
tremendous extent.”
