GREAT SCOTS
Scotland’s Emma White and Daniel Keatings
won the women’s and men’s all-around titles,
respectively, at the Northern European championships that took place Oct. 4-8 in Dublin.
Born March 19, 1990, in Peterborough,
White competed for Great Britain at the ’06
worlds. She placed first on vault and eighth all-around at the ’06 British championships; and
seventh all-around at the ’07 British championships. White is coached by Gheorghe Blaj
and Monica Desalermos.
Lizzie Beddoe of Wales took the all-around
silver medal, continuing a streak of excellent
results this year. Earlier in ’07, she placed first all-around at the Wales vs. Hungary dual meet for
juniors, the Celtic Cup in Northern Ireland and
the Welsh Open.
Norway’s Hansson twins, Kathrine and
Julie, finished third and 11th all-around. Born
Feb. 1, 1984, in Kristiansand, they competed at
the ’06 and ’07 worlds. The Hanssons are
coached by Octavian Ionasiu, who competed
for Romania at the ’81 and ’83 worlds.
Keatings, 17, easily won the men’s title. Earlier this year he placed second on pommel horse
and 13th all-around at Europeans; and seventh
on pommel horse at worlds.
Second to Keatings in Dublin was Denmark’s
Helge Vammen. Born July 21, 1986, in
Aarhus, Vammen was the top Danish all-arounder at the ’06 worlds (held in his hometown) and ’07 worlds.
Veterans held their own in the Dublin all-around. Finland’s Jani Tanskanen, who turned
32 on Nov. 28, won the bronze medal. His 31-
year-old teammate, Riku Koivunen, placed
fourth. Seventh was Norway’s Espen Jansen,
who turns 39 on Dec. 13.

BOCZOGO LEVELS LEVERKUSEN
2006 runner-up Dorina Boczogo of Hungary
won the all-around title at the 32nd annual Leverkusen Cup, held Oct. 13-14 in Germany. Born
Feb. 15, 1992, Boczogo placed 51st all-around
and 16th on vault in preliminaries at the world
championships held in Stuttgart in September.
Italy’s Andrea La Spada finished second,
over 2007 Romanian junior all-around champion Diana Trenca. Earlier this year, La Spada
placed fourth all-around at the Zelena Jama
Open in Ljubljana. Zelena Jama Open silver
medalist Raluca Haidu of Romania was sixth in
Leverkusen, and second to Trenca at the ’07
Romanian junior championships.
Winner of the inaugural Leverkusen Cup, held
in 1976, was Germany’s Andrea Bieger. She
is the mother of 2006 world all-around silver
medalist Jana Bieger of the U.S. Recent all-around champions include Germany’s Yvonne
Musik (2003), Italy’s Ilaria Colombo (2004),
Germany’s Daria Bijak (2005) and Belgium’s
Marieke Herteleer (2006). Musik, a 2004
Olympian, competed on three events this year
and scored 35.95.

Reiss Beckford won the men’s all-around title
and led his British team to victory at the Olympic
Hopes competition for juniors, held Oct. 20 in
Liberec, Czech Republic. The British women
also won as a team, led by all-around silver
medalist Jennifer Pinches.
Beckford, the 2006 U.K. School Games
champion, resides in Enfield and trains at the
South Essex club. His favorite event is high bar,
and his favorite gymnast is ’00 Olympic all-around champion Alexei Nemov.
